Re-imagine & Renovate: In The Mood For Indigo – Banded Placemats & Napkins

Why do we love fabric? Let me count the ways. Our apologies to Elizabeth Barrett Browning, but it seemed like a good quote to emphasize what a difference fabric makes to the end result of a project. This Re-imagine & Renovate series is our way to show you how one project can turn out an unlimited number of ways, depending on the choices you make with fabrics, trims and notions. Today’s set of matching placemats and napkins originally debuted as part of our Italiano Kitchen series, which had a playful, breakfast table casualness. In our new, rich tones of indigo, they’re now ready for prime time as lovely dinner table linens or perhaps for a sophisticated Sunday brunch.

Re-imagine & Renovate: In The Mood For Indigo – Beaded Head Scarf

Sometimes it’s fun to not worry about learning a whole new project; instead, why not take a fave design and simply twist it into a new look. In other words: Re-imagine & Renovate! The fabric you choose for a project can transform cute and quirky into sleek and stylish… girlie-girl flirty and floral can become masculine bold and modern. Today’s simple scarf was originally a dramatic gypsy style with two different coordinating fabrics front and back. Our new version is still reversible, but the look is toned down and lightened up. It’s the perfect spring accessory for our S4H model, Gerd, who, on just her third day in the USA from Denmark, was a very good sport about being photographed to become “a famous internet celebrity.” Thanks, Gerd! Have fun on the rest of your travels!

Re-imagine & Renovate: In The Mood For Indigo – Craft Apron

Every fabric has its own beauty and personality; how you combine them in a project gives you an unlimited number of wonderful end results. That’s the idea behind our R&R series: re-imagine and renovate a classic design in order to come up with a whole new look. This week, we picked four of our favorites and applied a coordinating color theme: indigo. For today’s project, we adapted the original clean white lines of our hardworking half apron and deepened its soul with indigo.

Re-imagine & Renovate: In The Mood For Indigo – Pillow Trio

In January of this year, we kicked off a new series called, “R&R.” It wasn’t about the traditional meaning: “Rest & Relaxation.” At Sew4Home, “R&R” stands for: “Re-imagine & Renovate.” It’s about putting a new spin on a favorite design, picking new fabrics, trims and notions to create a unique look. We’re back this month with four new twists and a special focus: Spring’s hottest color trend โ€“ Indigo. Today, we use it to transform our original set of perky Valentine’s Day pillows into a rich trio of indigo indulgence.

Retro-Style Bound & Quilted Oven Mitts

Our Retro hot pads not only feature a nostalgic fabric combo, they also have the perfect retro slip-on style. It’s a Sew4Home original pattern, and we offer it as a free download. The Simply Sweet fabrics on the two mitts are so bright and cheery, it made me want to slip them on and wear them around the kitchen, just waiting for something hot to pull out of the oven. After awhile, when no one showed up with a tray of cookies, I reluctantly took them off.

Everything Old Is New Again with Fabric.com: Clover Mini Iron

When a really useful tool comes into our lives, we adopt it as a new convenience, then usually find it hard to envision more than just small improvements to its basic design. This is the case for most us when it comes to our trusty irons. Today’s irons are the same basic shape and size they have been for decades. We accept them, use them and are pretty happy with how they perform. So, when we decided to review the Clover Mini Iron II as part of our latest Fabric.com series, we were, at first, stumped as to exactly how we might use this tiny little iron. Our current steam irons were doing a good job handling the pressing tasks we needed, and this product looked more like a cross between my brother’s wood burning tool set (which I was not allowed to touch), and my own curling iron. However, once we played with the little devil, we came up with all kinds of ideas. As we often say, using the right, specialized tools makes things go more quickly, more easily and often… makes the task more fun!

Patent Leather Vinyl Color Block Tote

Color block isย the fashion statement this spring. We’ve spotted the style on everything from pretty pillows to darling dresses to terrific totes… like this one. In order to give you two trends for the price of one, we executed the signature color block style in one of the popular new laminated fabrics, choosing bold black and white patent leather vinyls from Fabric.com. Stylish and sophisticated, our tote design is actually very easy to make, even with its posh cotton lining and double shoulder straps. The bag was sitting on the end of my work table for a couple days, and every single person who walked by had to pick it up, admire it and try it on for size… even the guys!

Everything Old Is New Again with Fabric.com: Seersucker Trimmed Bedsheet & Pillowcases

An entire set of bed sheets in seersucker would be overkill, but seersucker accents turn a plain purchased sheet set into a designer combo, and you could easily complete this project in an afternoon. For our sample, we upscaled one queen sheet set: bottom sheet, top sheet and two standard pillowcases. We found our 325 thread count, 100% Organic Cotton set at Target for just $37. It looked like a $130 set from Pottery Barn when we got done with it! You can buy new as we did, or upscale an existing sheet set to give it new life… the top sheet bands and pillowcase cuffs are usually the first to fray and start to look dingy. Cut them away and add something fresh and pretty.

Everything Old Is New Again with Fabric.com: Seersucker Flanged Pillow Shams

Keep It Crisp — that’s our seersucker slogan! It’s day three of the Everything Old is New Again series, sponsored by Fabric.com, and we continue our rippling romance with seersucker. Today we pair its crisp, fresh stripes with solid cotton twill to create a pair of pillow shams. Ours feature a pretty mitered flange and rick rack to frame the snow white center. If you’ve never tried mitered corners as a outer frame, we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how easy we’ve made it to understand.

Products We Love: Steady Betty

One of the most important parts of sewing has nothing to do with your sewing machine at all. It’s the pressing process. The better job you do pressing your project, the more professional the result. We recently discovered a specialty pressing tool that has become a new favorite: the Steady Betty pressing surfaces. Originally designed for quilters, these boards are great for all kinds of pressing tasks. Their special surface gently holds your fabric in place, which means less stretching and distortion. And, they stay cooler than a traditional ironing board surface, but still allow enough heat to be delivered to the fabric. No more “ouchie” fingers when working with tiny binding folds or opening ยผ” seams. Steady Betty has a wide variety of products. We took a look at their Original pressing board, the new Press & Pin board and a Pedal Betty, which keeps your machine’s foot controller from creeping away from you.

ScrapBusters: Baby’s Sleeping Door Hanger

Remember those “Baby on Board” placards that used to be so popular? They spawned an entire line of bizarre copycats; I remember seeing everything from “Mother-in-Law on Board” to “Alien on Board”! The original baby idea as a warning sign was a good one, and is similar to today’s ScrapBusters project. When baby is finally asleep, gently shut the nursery door, then slip this sweet door hanger over the knob to warn the rest of your noisy family it’s time to tip-toe because, “Baby’s Sleeping!” This project is fast and easy to make and uses just a few tiny bits of fabric, batting and trim. It would make a wonderful shower gift.

Heather Jones’ Wonky Block Modern Quilting Project

The world of Modern Quilting is a “wonky” world. If something is “wonky” it means angles, sides and points are not necessarily straight and true. For years, “wonky” was the worst thing your quilt could be. It meant all those carefully cut squares and triangles and strips were not precise. But like coloring outside the lines, this imperfection is what gives a modern quilt its free-form creativity. “Cut until it fits” is a mantra followed by many a modern quilter. One of our favorite modern quilters is Heather Jones, who was our guest yesterday with a tutorial on Straight Line Quilting. Today, Heather’s back with a Guest Project from the wonky world: the wonky log cabin block. Take it away, Heather!
