Peace and love are flowing your way with our unique Flower Power Pillow – a fun addition to your favorite pillow pile.
This is a beginner-friendly project anyone will enjoy, but it does also feature several interesting techniques that are excellent learning opportunities for someone new. Even more experienced sewers may find something they haven’t seen before or recognize an old skill they can brush up on.
When putting together the pillow, the ePattern from our Etsy Shop gives you detailed instructions for fussy cutting with a pattern frame, decorative stitching tips, making a custom covered button, how to cinch a shape using pearl cotton floss, and even some handy notes on pillow stuffing.
The Flower Power Pillow is reversible with eight petals front and back. We used six different fabrics for the best blend, but you could use up to sixteen different cuts or reduce it all down to just one. As always, the final fabric decisions are up to you.
There’s a free petal pattern to download. We recommend printing the pattern first then using it to scour your scrap stash for the prettiest prints. You can, of course, choose to not add any decorative stitching. We admit it does add time to the overall construction, but we believe the extra precision and patience are worth it – especially with all the beautiful stitch options available on today’s sewing machines. We even used a “stacked stitch,” combining a standard heirloom pattern and a triple straight stitch.
The decorative stitching is done to either side of each petal seam. That stitching turns into the look of stitch-in-the-ditch when each of the petal sections is cinched with the pearl cotton floss – a technique you might recognize from doll making.

There are three PDF files included in this $5.95 purchase. As a digital download, we understand you are providing the paper and ink and so have included flexible printing alternatives. The first file contains all the steps plus all the full color instructional photos; it’s a great option for viewing on your computer or other digital device to fully understand the construction process. The second file is condensed to black and white with just the steps (no photos) to make printing even more efficient. The third file contains the pattern piece. All three files can be printed on either US Letter paper or A4 paper, using Adobe Acrobat Reader (a free program). No fabric or supplies are included.
