This custom machine embroidery design set is so radically retro, it has received the official Jetsons Seal of Approval! Even if you’re not from Orbit City, we think you’ll love our nostalgic Atomic Embroidery.
There are three complete designs celebrating: Happy Hour, an Open Kitchen, and the stylized Black Cat. In addition, there are individual Atomic Particle Starbursts, the full alphabet we used, and a bonus set of background diamonds to build your own lettering banners, as shown on our Guest towel.
Thanks to our sponsorship from Janome America, this entire design set is offered below as FREE downloads in seven popular machine embroidery formats. It’s also thanks to Janome that our stitch outs look so beautiful.
All our samples were stitched on the top-of-the-line Janome Continental M17 sewing and embroidery machine. The three main designs range in size from 4½” x 5½” to 5” x 7”, which means they should fit most standard mid-range machine embroidery hoops. We used the Janome RE20d Hoop, which is 5½” x 8”.
One note to keep in mind: we initially used the larger Janome SQ28d Hoop when building our custom lettering names/words on screen, which gave us more room to “play.” Once the letters are grouped, they can be rotated 90° and changed to a smaller hoop. All that is necessary is to ensure the baste lines align.
S4H is a Janome Exclusive Studio and has been since the beginning of the site. We have never found another range of machines that offers the same precision, flexibility, power, reliability, and ease-of-use. When these five features come together, the result is true quality and a professional finish. If you are planning to buy a home embroidery machine, Janome has our Seal of Approval.
The embroidery files themselves are offered here in two separate folder collections. One collection includes the three main Atomic designs plus a large and small version of the Atomic Particle Starburst. The second collection includes all 26 letters of the Atomic Alphabet as well as the optional Background Diamonds in sets of three, four, and five diamonds. Each of the two collections is available in seven major machine embroidery formats: ART, EXP, JEF, JPX, PES, VIP and VP3.
In addition to the design elements themselves, we’ve included FIVE additional PDFs:
- Construction steps for making your own linen towels, basic instructions for setting up to stitch-out the main embroidery designs, plus hints and tips for selecting stabilizers.
- Atomic Embroidery Color Chart for the three main designs and the Atomic Particle Starbursts
- Atomic Embroidery Templates for the three main designs and the Atomic Particle Starbursts
- How to set up words using the Atomic Alphabet with Janome-centric screens and notes
- How to set up words using the Atomic Alphabet AND the Optional Background Diamonds PLUS a Color Chart for the Diamonds with Janome-centric screens and notes
Our samples were stitched onto classic linen towels, but the designs would look incredible on a wide variety of items: T-shirts, jean jackets, totes, pillows, napkins, coasters… the list goes on. We chose 50wt cotton Aurifil thread in a traditional mid-century modern palette of aqua, pink, citron, olive, and orange as well as black and white. These color selections are detailed on the Color Chart, but of course, the final colors as well as the destination for the designs are always up to you.
S4H Seamstress Team Member, Michele Mishler is the digitizing master who brought these designs to life! As always, the designs are copyrighted, and are for personal use and gifts only.
We realize not everyone has access to an embroidery machine, but we hope this set of striking designs will inspire you to find out more about how interesting and affordable it can be to add machine embroidery to your sewing space. We recommend taking a look at the full selection of Janome machines at your local Janome America dealer, from the top-of-the-line, sewing + embroidery Continental M17 to our studio favorites: the Skyline S9 and the brand new and very affordable Memory Craft 1000, to the embroidery-only Memory Craft 550E,Visit the Janome America site for all the details.
